Elements and Principles of Design Scavenger Hunt

We learned about the elements and principles of design by taking pictures from our everyday lives. We then matched those pictures with definitions. My partner (Alexis) and I made flashcards that we could use with our 3-5 graders. Each flashcard had the element or principle name at the top with both of our pictures. On the back was the definition.

Focal Point/Emphasis:

I chose this photo because the focal point is clearly the cat's face. The rest of her body is slightly blurred, and the direction she is looking leads you to look at her eyes. Nothing in the background or sides is distracting.
Unity/Variety:

Everything in this picture is a cactus, which gives it unity. However, there are different shapes, sizes, and colors. This adds interest and gives the image some variety in its design.
Balance:

This design has symmetrical or radial balance. If you split it vertically down the middle, it is the same on either side.
Color:

This design has a vibrant use of color.
Movement:

This image gives students an idea of how to imply movement in a design. The swirling line looks like it is actively flowing across the painting, giving it a sense of movement.

Extension Activity:  After learning about the elements and principles of design, the students would have a special project to learn about texture. They would use Gelli plate printing to explore lots of different textures. I would have stencils, stamps, and other textured materials for them to choose from. This will help them to see how physical textures transfer to visual, and how they can then incorporate some of these ideas into future art projects.
