Aboriginal Art - Painting

For this project, we learned about an artist from Australia who created dot paintings. It was also connected to a social studies lesson about Australia and geography. Then we created our own dot paintings using Q-tips and paper bags. Students got to decide between either a gecko or a kangaroo cut-out to glue onto their painting. We talked about using the whole space and were encouraged to fill the page with dots. 


Extension Activity:  I would tie dot painting in with a different artist in history: Georges Seurat. We would talk about the Post-Impressionism movement and have a series of projects based on artists from that time period. We would also talk about world history.

Hidden Safari

 After learning about artist Henri Rousseau, we made a project with a hidden safari animal. We began with an upside down contour drawing. Drawing upside down is a technique that helps focus attention on abstract lines and shapes to make an accurate picture. We drew the animal with a light blue colored pencil. Next, we used pattern and warm colors in order to hide our safari animal. I overlapped several patterns until I couldn't see the animal anymore. We then made glasses out of construction paper and red plastic. When you look through the glasses, the safari animal becomes visible again.  Extension Activity:  I would use this technique for an art history review activity. An artist, artwork, or art movement would be hidden under the patterns. There would be clues written out for the students, and they would have to try to figure out the hidden answer.

Wassily Kandinsky Drawings

 This project focused on geometric and organic shapes and patterns. Our drawings were based off the work of Wassily Kandinsky, who was a Russian artist well known for his abstract paintings.  On our papers, we drew three geometric shapes and three organic shapes overlapping each other. Then, we drew one line across the paper. We also had to include two patterns within our shapes. Each space- created by our overlapping shapes and lines- had its own color. We listed to music and chose colors based on how the music made us feel.  Extension Activity:  I would do this activity to learn about contrast and positive and negative space. We would do a similar drawing but only use black and white. This challenges students to think about the relationship between positive and negative space within a design and whether one has more impact than the other.

2D Paper Project - Shaving Cream Marbling

 This lesson focused on the paintings of Jackson Pollock. He created abstract art through the technique of drip painting. We created our own paintings based on how Jackson Pollock's paintings look. We were given three piles of shaving cream and swirled food coloring in them. Each pile had two primary colors in order to create the secondary colors: orange, green, and purple. We pressed a paper shape into each pile of shaving cream, peeled them off, and scraped off the extra shaving cream. In the end, we were left with a super cool design! We then glued the shapes onto a piece of construction paper, used pattern to create borders around the shapes, named our piece, and wrote a sentence about our designs.  Extension Activity: Like I mentioned in my project, these designs remind me of planets in space. This activity could easily be incorporated with a science lesson about the solar system. Students would use colors to mimic each planet and the sun, cut them out relatively to scale...
